Texas A&M marks HSI Week with special lectures and a research initiative

POSTED ON Sep 12, 2023

Last year, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), an association committed to Latinx higher education success, recognized Texas A&M University as a Hispanic-serving institution.

The U.S. Department of Education has also designated Texas A&M University as an eligible institution for HSI.

According to HACU, an HSI is a college, university, or system/district where total Hispanic enrollment constitutes a minimum of 25 percent.

This week, more than 500 colleges and universities across the United States, including Texas A&M, are celebrating National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) week.

The celebration involves a series of campus programs, social media campaigns, and community efforts to bring awareness to the critical roles they have in improving access to education and advancing equity for traditionally underserved students.

In honor of HSI Week, the Race & Ethnic Studies Institute in the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M announced a partnership with HACU.

As part of the celebration, a special lecture titled “State Systems and the Advancement of Servingness at Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institutions” will be hosted on September 13.

The lecture, led by Dr. Ishara Casellas Connors, Dr. Darrel Wanzer-Serrano, and Mariana Rodriguez, is particularly relevant for those interested in Latinx education policy and HSIs.

Texas A&M has created the HSI Research Initiative in recognition of its designation as an HSI.

This initiative aims to support transformative and translational research opportunities and be the hub for HSI-oriented research in the College of Arts & Sciences and across the university.

HSI Initiative projects include the Emerging Visions of Learning, Voices, & Equity at HSIs (EVOLVE HSIs) Study and the Anti-DEI Legislation Impact Study at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (ADLIS-HSI).
