The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) has partnered with Medtronic and the Medtronic Foundation to launch a college program that removes barriers for Hispanic and Latino students that are studying STEM.
The partnership includes more than $3 million over the next four years for things like: scholarships, internships and mentorship opportunities for SHPE students.
Medtronic is committing over $2 million over the next four years to the InternSHPE and MentorSHPE programs, which should help open doors to more careers in the STEM field for Hispanic and Latino students.
“Hispanics and Latinos are underrepresented in the STEM workforce, as a Hispanic engineer myself, I am excited about opportunities like this that can change that” Noel Colon, senior vice president and Chief Quality Officer at Medtronic said.
The programs will allow students to focus on learning by helping eliminate concerns about education costs, with the goal of attracting young Hispanic and Latino talent to Medtronic.
Gerardo Zuniga, one of the leading program initiators for the Medtronic Hispanic and Latino Network support group, spoke about the importance of forming programs like this one.
“It may not be my day job, but I will take on challenge after challenge to support Medtronic inclusion, diversity and equity efforts like the partnership with SHPE, together we can remove barriers for the Hispanic community,” Zuniga said.
Medtronic is a company that is committed to inclusion, diversity and equity, meaning they serve zero barriers to opportunities. The partnership with SHPE is an example of their impact beyond their company by encouraging diversity in STEM.
