Fifty members of SHPE and a few SHPE staff attended a briefing on “Building the Next Generation of Hispanic Leaders in STEM” at the White House in Washington, DC, organized by the Office of Public Engagement on April 18.
The White House’s Office of Public Engagement organized the briefing for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and officials to discuss creating a sustainable education and workforce pipeline for Hispanic students and professionals in STEM.
The briefing covered early STEM education, Latinas in STEM, and workforce development, with participants emphasizing the importance of early exposure to STEM and representation for Latinas in STEM.
Dr. Michela Muñoz Fernández from NASA and Dr. Nafeesa Owens from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy emphasized collaboration with academia and the private sector to close the gap between talent and non-traditional education and workforce pathways.
Sol Ortega from the White House’s Office of Public Engagement highlighted the importance of partnerships with SHPE to increase access, awareness, and workforce development opportunities for Hispanics in STEM. Read the post-event report here.
