NASA marked the start of Hispanic Heritage Month 2023 with a new season of Universo Curioso, a Spanish-language podcast exploring the cosmos with mission experts.
NASA is also featuring noteworthy individuals from Hispanic and Latino communities who have made commendable contributions to American society and NASA.
NASA also released an announcement by Frank Rubio from space dedicated to retired NASA astronaut José Hernández.
Hernandez’s life and career are the central theme of the newly-released film entitled “A Million Miles Away”, featuring Michael Peña as the protagonist.
The film narrates Hernández’s path from a migrant farmer to a groundbreaking NASA space explorer.
To bring this immersive story to life, NASA partnered with Amazon Studios, contributing their technical know-how, footage, and imagery, and ensured that the set designs, properties, and costumes were accurately portrayed.
NASA will commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month across the agency to recognize the invaluable cultural impact and tireless dedication of Hispanics and Latinos toward the mission to go beyond.
Memorable images feature Astronaut Ellen Ochoa preparing for water survival training in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, Astronaut Franklin R. Chang-Diaz holding a taco at the galley on the mid-deck of the Earth-orbiting space shuttle Columbia, Jose Hernandez in his launch and entry suit on the flight deck of Discovery, NASA astronaut and Expedition 69 Flight Engineer Frank Rubio posing for a portrait while working inside the International Space Station’s Destiny laboratory module, Expedition 57 crew member Serena Aunon-Chancellor photographed during the International Space Station EVA Maintenance 6 training in the Sonny Carter Training Center Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Joe Acaba waving to family and friends before the launch of the Soyuz TMA-04M, and Mission Specialist Carlos I.
