The month-long campus events kicked off on September 20 with an afternoon of music, activities, and food at the Latinx Kick-Off.

There is also a film screening of Strawberry Picker on September 21, followed by a Q&A session with the film director.

Strawberry Picker tells the story of a boy in a labor camp who grew up to be a world-class artist and highlights generations of struggle and resilience in the Chicano Art community through the experiences of Juan R. Fuentes. The director’s talk and reception featured an array of strawberry-themed foods and beverages.

On September 25, the campus is invited to view the special film screening of A Million Miles Away, the story of University of California Regent and former NASA astronaut José Hernández.

Hernandez will give brief remarks before the two-hour film.

Manuel Duenas, a lecturer in the Department of Anthropology & Heritage Studies at UC Merced, will give a talk on September 27 based on the theme: Beyond Borders: Cerro de Enmedio Uncovered: Insights into Northern Mesoamerica’s Cultural Nexus & Chronology.

There will be a second luncheon on September 25, where students can connect with inspiring Latinx faculty and staff on campus.

On October 10, Dr. Cuellar will speak about the experiences of Latinx students at Hispanic-serving institutions. Overall, the events aim to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Latinx scholars and promote their success within the UC Merced community and beyond.
