A teenager from Montgomery County had the desire to help other students learn about subjects in STEM during the beginning of the pandemic, she now has her own online program.
Sarah Bagheri, a rising senior at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, and her brother launched MoCo Scientists for Kids. The 30-minute, free-of-cost, virtual program started in April 2020 and is made to introduce kids to subjects and careers in the STEM field.
“I feel like we were launched into a pandemic, and no one was ready for it, I wanted all kids to have free access to education,” Bagheri said.
The program is hosted every other week through Webex, a web-conferencing platform. During the program, Bagheri talks live with experts in the STEM fields, while also allowing students to join in and ask their own questions as well.
Topics featured on MoCo range from areas of health care, veterinary medicine, marine biology, artificial intelligence, and more.
Bagheri has dreams of becoming a physician one day, and this is what helped kick start the program creation.
“I really want to make an impact on everyone, so I wanted to teach other kids about the different aspects of STEM,” Bagheri said.
The program is open to students of all ages and episodes can be found on the MoCo Scientists for Kids website.
