In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Cell, a website that helps answer questions about life sciences careers, showcased a list of 100 Hispanic/Latinx scientists. According to Cell, the list was selected based on scholarly achievements, mentoring excellence, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The post to the website was made by Christina M. Termini, Ph.D., a Damon Runyon postdoc and a University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Termini said the list highlights scientists in academia, government, and biotech and showcases individuals committed to serving diverse student populations at Hispanic-serving institutions.
She also gave credit to scholars that helped generate the list, including Dr. Antentor O. Hinton Jr. (lead author of 100 inspiring black scientists in America), Dr. Melanie R McReynolds, and Amara Pang.
Funding sources that supported the efforts include the Damon Runyon Cancer Foundation, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Ford Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Hanna H. Gray Fellowship, and the E. E. Just Postdoctoral Fellowship.
