In February 2024, the National Academy of Inventors, based in Tampa, Florida, released the list of the top 100 U.S. universities granted U.S. utility patents during the 2023 calendar year.
The Regents of the University of California lead the list with 546 patents, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with 365 patents, and the University of Texas System with 235.
Purdue and Stanford follow with 201 and 199 patents respectively.
Arizona State University (ASU) announced that it had risen to No. 7 among the world’s top universities for U.S. utility patents issued in 2023.
ASU secured 170 U.S. utility patents, an increase from 160 in 2022.
The patents include technologies for a colon cancer treatment using genetically modified bacteria, a test to identify disease-specific antibodies using a wearable device, and an environmentally sustainable alternative to cement.
ASU also secured three U.S. patents for technologies expected to help the Biodesign Institute build the world’s first compact X-ray free electron laser, enabling scientific observations for understanding human health and advancing renewable energy research, among other applications.
Texas Tech University (TTU) System announced that it had been named to the Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted Utility Patents List for the second year.
In 2023, TTU was granted 70% of the patents held by the Texas Tech University System.
Morgan State University, tied with Clemson University, Kansas State University, Thomas Jefferson University, and Virginia Commonwealth University, ranked 99 on the list.
Temple University, along with several others, tied at 81st place with 17 patents. The University of North Texas, University of Georgia, and West Virginia University ranked 91 with 15 patents.
