The track and field program at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) did a roll call of past, present, and future student-athletes on Twitter recently. The Miners, as members of UTEP Athletics are commonly known, will represent their home countries at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The athletes include Loubna Benhadja, who will compete at her first Olympics in Tokyo. Sean Bailey, who will also make his first appearance at the Olympics, was an All-American in 2019 and claimed three gold medals and a bronze at the 2021 Conference-USA Championships.
Other first-time Olympians include Emmanuel Korir, the current record holder at UTEP in the 400m dash, and Asa Guevara, who won the men’s 400m dash at the C-USA Championships.
Ned Azemia, currently a junior at UTEP, will compete in his second Olympic Summer Games. Azemia ran the 400m hurdles in 2016. Tobi Amusan holds the school record in the 100m hurdles and 200m dash.
Churandy Martina is the most experienced as he prepares for his fifth Olympic appearance. Martina was a three-time All-American at UTEP, and he recently claimed bronze at the 2018 European Championships in the 4x100m relay in Berlin
According to UTEP, more than 70 individuals from UTEP’s track and field program have competed in the Olympic Games since 1952.
In 1984, the Miners were awarded 15 Olympic medals with Bob Beamon of Mexico City and Ria Stalman of Los Angeles winning gold in 1968 and 1984, respectively.
