In 2018, a tech event connecting Latin America hosted Sophia, the artificial intelligence (AI) robot.
Sophia was created using breakthrough robotics and AI technologies.
This spring, Sophia was the speaker at D’Youville University’s 2024 commencement, marking the culmination of a year-long campaign to raise awareness about AI.
On April 10, D’Youville University community members joined an A.I.-focused event. This year’s discussion touched on the use of ethical AI in higher education and the healthcare industry as AI continues to grow.
D’Youville University has taken a proactive stance in incorporating AI into its programs.
This includes providing students with MetaReady devices and hosting events to educate the community about the future of AI in healthcare.
President Lorrie Clemo reiterated the university’s mission to prepare students for the future.
She emphasized that higher education plays a pivotal role as an incubator for innovation. The “aim is to equip students with the skills and knowledge to navigate the opportunities and challenges of the future. ”
However, the choice of a humanoid artificial intelligence robot addressing the commencement crowd drew mixed reactions.
A petition started by Andrew Fields stated in part:
“We are real people who learn how to provide for real people. As students, we experience our “firsts” as we progress in our studies; we have our first patient on fieldwork, we draw blood for the first time, and we can adjust, prescribe, engage, and provide care because of the time we spend at D’Youville. Our 2024 commencement speaker should represent the importance of human connection. As the class of 2024 reaches its commencement, we are reminded of the virtual graduations we attended at the end of our high school careers. The connection to A.I. in this scenario feels similarly impersonal. In the last four years, we have learned how important human connection is to our well-being and professions.”
