The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has announced that the College of Engineering and the College of Science will hold Spring Commencement ceremonies corresponding to these colleges on Sunday, May 19 at the Don Haskins Center. To mark the transition, UTEP has also launched a commencement website where graduates will share how UTEP  has helped them or a fellow graduate achieve their goals.

“Each commencement provides UTEP an opportunity to tell a story through the experiences and future plans of a graduate,” UTEP wrote in its 2019 Commencement information booklet, where it invites graduates to talk about their next steps.

Students have been asked to consider the impact UTEP has had on their lives, an individual at UTEP who made a significant impact in completing their education,  and a turning point, incident, course, or experience that sparked their success. They have also been asked to share future plans such as acceptance at graduate/professional school, employment, and alumni connections of their immediate or extended family who are graduates of UTEP.

Compelling stories will be included in President Diana Natalicio’s 2019 commencement remarks. In Natalicio’s final remarks to the class of 2017, she urged graduates to make the most of their education out in the real world.

“You set high aspirations for yourselves, persevered and worked hard to develop your talents and achieve your goals,” she said. “(You have) greatly increased the probability that the success you celebrate… will serve as a springboard for other big dreams that you’ll achieve in the future, much as you did this one.”

More than 700 graduates from the colleges of Engineering and Science were celebrated at three Commencement ceremonies that honored more than 2,300 graduates.

Over 20,000 graduates, family members, and friends were at the Don Haskins Center. In typical fashion for UTEP, civil engineering graduates donned orange hard hats instead of the traditional mortarboards.
