The University of California, Irvine (UCI) has announced that they will not be offering a traditional commencement ceremony. However, graduates will be able to participate in a special in-person procession and individual commemoration.
“Though circumstances may improve by June, it takes months of planning to prepare for our usual festivities, which draws over 70,000 visitors from around the world,” the statement on the website reads. “While vaccines are becoming more available, we are unable to predict the state of our public health and immunity in June. The following plan reflects careful consideration that allows us to celebrate our graduating students in a way that is meaningful, but reflects the uncertainty that the pandemic continues to present us.”
All graduating students will join a campuswide virtual ceremony on June 12 that will include speeches and the conferring of degrees. The ceremony will be streamed online. Each school and college will have individual virtual receptions on June 12 immediately following the virtual campuswide commencement.
According to UCI’s special reports, more than 10,00 students will receive their bachelor’s degrees as members of UCI’s 55th graduating class, with 7,500 students taking part in online ceremonies on June 12.
