The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) has announced that the organization will be celebrating Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month in collaboration with the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE).
Founded in 2007, SASE helps Asian heritage scientific and engineering professionals achieve their full potential, and students representing all of the pan Asian cultures connect and support each other.
SHPE was founded in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Latino community.
This month, SHPE and SASE plan to celebrate the intersection of cultures during the next Noche de Ciencias on May 31. The theme for the virtual event is Celebrating Latinx and AANHPI Intersection.
The “Supporting Engineering Pathways” session will feature a parent virtual workshop covering information about the importance of going to college and how parents of first-generation students are instrumental in supporting their college journey.
SHPE’s Noche de Ciencias program is designed to introduce high schoolers and their families to opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. The events are delivered by SHPE Professional and University chapters.
In related news, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders announced that the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders will meet on May 12th.
Issues to be discussed include the recommendations by the commission’s subcommittees. The subcommittees are Belonging, Inclusion, Anti-Asian Hate, Anti-Discrimination; Data Disaggregation; Language Access; Economic Equity; Health Equity; and Immigration and Citizenship Status.
In collaboration with @saseconnect, we will be celebrating #AANHPImonth and the intersection of cultures during our next Noche de Ciencias!
Please share event info with any K-12 students interested in #STEM. All are welcome!https://t.co/eVCth42zZ0 pic.twitter.com/WKx8oc1w8t
