Ligia Flores and Kiara Sanchez, both Mathematics graduate students, are expected to present their work at the 2020 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Conference on Mathematics of Planet Earth in June. The annual event is billed to attract more than 500 institutional members from academia, manufacturing, research and development, service and consulting organizations, government, and military organizations.
Flores and Sanchez are part of the Math and Climate Research Network program, which works to understand the mathematics of the arctic polar vortex. Recently, Flores and Sanchez spoke to Sam Houston University media about the importance of their research.
“Climate change is inevitably an environmental justice issue,” Sanchez told SHU. “This is how my passion for food and environmental justice translated into my interest in Math and Climate.”
“Climate change tipping points are a serious concern,” Flores said in the same interview. “There are several reasons as to why this ‘cold snap’ is happening with one being the arctic polar vortex, but what is the main cause? Our research will help gain a better understanding of why this is happening, with many identifying climate change as an influence.”
The SIAM Conference on Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE20) will take place June 8 – 10 at the Hyatt Regency Orange County | Garden Grove, California.
