The biggest annual celebration at the University of Texas at El Paso, Minerpalooza, was held recently. It marked the finale of the Miner Welcome festivities with a variety of music and activities.
Admission was free and open to the public.
The event showcased the conclusion of UTEP’s Battle of the Bands and is one of the main fundraising events each year for student organizations at UTEP.
The proceeds contribute to UTEP student groups’ annual initiatives.
To mark the special event, the “Mining Minds” pickaxe sculpture at UTEP’s University Ave. roundabout was lit blue and orange. Installed in 2010, “Mining Minds” is illuminated blue and orange to celebrate special days, accomplishments, and more.
Charlin Jones-Chávez, Ph.D., assistant dean of students, highlighted that Minerpalooza is a vital part of UTEP’s efforts to foster belonging among their students and support them as they create meaningful connections on campus.
Chávez also emphasized that the celebration bridges the University and the local community, strengthening the bonds that make them vibrant.
The University of Texas at El Paso is America’s leading Hispanic-serving university. Over 80% of UTEP’s 24,000 students are Hispanic, and more than half are the first in their families to attend college.
