SACNAS, an organization dedicated to advancing Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in science, is hosting a leadership program for early- and mid-career professionals at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute from June 9 to 13.

Two additional leadership opportunities will be available for postdoctoral researchers, undergraduates, and graduate chapter officers during the 2025 SACNAS NDiSTEM Conference in October.

This week’s SACNAS program, held from June 9 to 13, is celebrating a community of emerging STEM leaders who have been selected for the Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute.

According to SACNAS, this event is taking place at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Headquarters, with support from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

The Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute is a leadership training program established in 2009 by Clifton Poodry, Ph.D., and Marigold Linton, Ph.D., both co-founders of SACNAS

The program aims to equip scientists with the skills necessary to lead transformative changes in their respective fields.

Linton noted that the initiative arose after observing that PhD members within SACNAS were not achieving high-level leadership positions. To address this gap, Poodry and Linton created the Leadership Institute to cultivate future leaders who could change the face of science.

Nearly 15 years later, Poodry expressed delight and gratitude for the numerous alumni of the Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute who have taken on significant leadership roles in various sectors, including industry, academia, and philanthropy.

According to SACNAS, among the 440+ alums, many are now leaders in their fields, serving as executive directors, program directors, assistant deans, department chairs, entrepreneurs, senior scientists in industry, and emerging leaders in science policy.

The 2025 cohort consists of members from a range of colleges, universities, and nonprofits, including the University of California, Los Angeles; the American Chemical Society; University of California, San Diego; University of California, Santa Cruz; University of Wisconsin; Universidad del Sagrado Corazón; Georgia Southern University; Harvard University; University of Puerto Rico-Bayamón; Dartmouth College; Carnegie Mellon University; University of California, Santa Barbara; Whittier College; STEAM Access NM; and the Cuvette Collective.

A participant from the 2024 cohort shared on the SACNAS website that the Linton-Poodry sessions were highly informative and engaging, providing valuable insights into leadership and personal development.

They expressed appreciation for the variety of topics covered and the expertise of the speakers.

They also recommended continued support and networking opportunities with fellow participants to help maintain momentum and effectively implement the lessons learned.
