Recently, the USDA announced the 2023 class of E. Kika De La Garza Fellows, comprising 30 faculty and staff from Hispanic-Serving Institutions across the US.

The program aims to educate the fellows about USDA services and programs that benefit them and their students, promoting equity in professional development and diversity in public service and agriculture.

The fellows met with USDA agency leaders in Washington, D.C. and will collaborate with top scientists from USDA’s Agricultural Research Service or Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Soil Survey Center in Nebraska.

Established in 1998, the program has hosted over 300 faculty and staff, strengthening relationships with Hispanic-Serving Institutions. It is part of USDA’s Hispanic-Serving Institutions National Program, which supports a 21st-century agricultural workforce.

Dr. Lisa R. Ramírez, director of USDA’s Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement, said, “The goal of this program is to provide the selected fellows with direct access to USDA agency representatives and educate them on the opportunities available to their respective institutions and their students. This program aligns with USDA’s commitment to ensuring equal access to the department’s programs, services, and resources by underserved groups.”

The 2023 E. Kika De La Garza Science Fellows are from Texas A&M University, Eastern New Mexico University, the University of Arizona, and California State University. See the full list here.

USDA partners with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities to provide high-quality internship experiences, having placed over 3,000 interns since 1994.
