The University of Texas at Austin held its 141st spring commencement ceremony on May 11

POSTED ON May 30, 2024

The undergraduate class of 2024 was the university’s first group of students to begin at UT during the global pandemic that started in 2020.

Some 7,630 bachelor’s degrees were awarded, 2,344 master’s degrees, 343 doctoral degrees, 400 law degrees, and 160 other professional degrees, for a total of 10,877.

“My mother, who arrived with nothing and gave me everything, thank you for your sacrifice and support,” said one graduate in Spanish.

President Jay Hartzell addressed the unique experience of this class in his remarks.

He acknowledged that many of the students were in their final semester of high school when the pandemic hit in the spring of 2020.

He also mentioned that the graduate students may have been starting to work on their advanced degrees during that time.

He emphasized the importance of celebrating the students’ current achievements and expressed that the University of Texas takes pride in its graduation ceremonies.

President Hartzell acknowledged that many students missed out on a proper high school commencement and stated that the university aimed to make the current event extra memorable.

Retired Major General Jeannie M. Leavitt, the U.S. Air Force’s first female fighter pilot and a 1990 graduate of UT, delivered the commencement address.

During her 31 years of service, Leavitt logged over 3,000 hours of flight time, including over 300 hours of combat flying in Iraq and Afghanistan.
