The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) program, funded by the Department of Defense, is designed for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students.
SMART aims to cultivate leaders in 24 STEM disciplines and is the most comprehensive education and workforce development initiative under the Department of Defense STEM Program.
Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at one of over 150 Department of Defense facilities during their internships and apply this knowledge as early career professionals.
These facilities are at the forefront of innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, autonomy, cyber, space, 5G, and more.
SMART offers two scholarships: the SMART Scholarship and the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship. Both scholarship recipients receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed civilian employment with the Department of Defense after graduation.
Applications are open annually from August 1 to the first Friday in December. Click here to learn more.
Scholarship recipients receive full tuition to any U.S.-accredited college or university.
SMART scholars earn annual stipends between $30,000 and $46,000, depending on their degree level.
They also gain invaluable experience during summer internships with Department of Defense leaders. The benefits include full tuition coverage, an annual stipend, guaranteed employment at a DoD facility upon completion. Click here to learn more.
