The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) is honoring the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. SACNAS recognizes this time as a sacred time of ceremony, renewal, and connection to the sun in many traditions.

According to NASA, Friday, June 20, marks the summer solstice—the longest stretch of daylight in the Northern Hemisphere, thanks to Earth’s axial tilt for the extra hours.

NASA Sun Science noted on social media that the sun emitted a strong solar flare on June 19. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured an image of the event, which was classified as an X1.9 flare. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation.

Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth’s atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground. However, when intense enough, they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.

According to Sallie, summer is one of the best times to apply for #scholarships—but doing it can be hard. Use their tips to find, apply, and win money for school.

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) and Café Bustelo have twenty-five $5,000 El Café del Futuro Scholarships available. The deadline to submit applications is June 30.

HACU plays a vital role in bridging students with valuable scholarships provided by corporate and nonprofit partners.

These scholarships are designed to alleviate college expenses, covering tuition, books, fees, and other related costs, making education more accessible.

One exciting opportunity on the horizon is the Café Bustelo El Café Del Futuro Scholarship, which will award 25 deserving students with $5,000 each for the 2025-2026 academic year. Don’t forget, the application deadline is June 30, 2025!

Additionally, the Deloitte Foundation HACU Scholars program is offering 68 scholarships, each valued at $5,000 ($2,500 per semester) for the same academic year, with the same application deadline.

Finally, there are 10 Sands Hospitality Advancement Scholarships available, each providing $5,000.

Remember, the deadline for all these fantastic opportunities is June 30, 2025!

AISES has announced that the organization is now accepting applications for travel scholarships for students attending the 2025 AISES National Conference in Minneapolis, MN, from October 2-4.

According to AISES, the scholarships include conference registration fees, round-trip airfare (economy class), as well as lodging (same-gender roommate assignment).

To apply, you must be a full-time student (12+ credit hours) in a STEM field with a 3.0 GPA or higher and attend the full conference.
