The importance of internships for both students and organizations

Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology magazine asked top employers, who recruit at annual Career Communications Group diversity career fairs, to explain the importance of internship experiences, the qualities they look for in interns, what interns should bring to the table, the benefits of internships for both employers and students, and how an internship can lead to a full-time position.

A communications lead at The MITRE Corporation mentioned that due to the diverse nature of the corporation’s work,  the top three preferred majors for internships are computer science, computer engineering, and electrical engineering.

A university relations manager at Texas Instruments stated that TI typically seeks students with technical aptitude, eagerness to learn, solid skills, and interest in the field.

A representative from the corporate news bureau stated that Northrop Grumman aims to provide quality work assignments so that interns can apply the theories and principles learned in their college classes.

Northrop Grumman offers “lunch and learn” opportunities and tours at larger campuses for interns to learn about the company, its programs, and network with other interns and hiring managers.

Based on feedback from previous interns, a hands-on opportunity to partner with senior engineers and take ownership of a summer project contributes to an ideal internship experience.

According to a representative of student careers, internship programs provide young people with opportunities for personal, professional, and social development. Interns participate in technology workshops, meaningful work assignments, manager and intern activities, networking events, senior leadership round tables, and presentations.

Overall, internships are seen as a valuable part of the recruiting process, providing a preview of the talent pool and potentially leading to future job offers based on the interns’ performance, skills, and abilities.

Interns are expected to have good knowledge, skills, and abilities in the relevant field, along with a professional attitude, good communication skills, and the ability to take initiative and participate effectively in a team.

Successful internships can greatly increase the chances of receiving a full-time job offer at the end of the program.
