In February, Diana Trujillo became NASA’s 108th Flight Director, completing the 2022 Flight Director class.
Her team name, “Somos Flight,” refers to a community.
“Somos,” meaning “we are,” represents who we are as people, what we value, what we have gone through to become, and what we can achieve together.
Despite starting out cleaning houses, the Colombia-born aerospace engineer has led an engineering team at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is responsible for the 7-foot robotic arm of the Perseverance rover that successfully landed on Mars.
Trujillo previously served as the mission lead for the Mars Curiosity rover, where she developed a dust removal tool to help scientists explore Mars’ surface.
She was the first Hispanic immigrant woman accepted into NASA Academy and hopes to inspire the next generation to follow in her footsteps.
Flight directors are responsible for leading teams of flight controllers, astronauts, research and engineering experts, and commercial and international partners around the world, and for making the real-time decisions critical to keeping NASA astronauts safe in space.
To be considered, flight director candidates must be U.S. citizens with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics
