Take advantage of the Summer Job Spike

POSTED ON Jul 26, 2024

The U.S. added 272,000 jobs in May, which is good news for the more than 2 million high school and college students expected to work summer jobs or internships this year, according to Money Watch.

During one internship season, Raytheon forecasted more than 500 intern/co-op requirements company-wide. As former intern David Rodriguez puts it, “An internship to a student means a foot in the door. It’s an opportunity for experience in an industry of interest.”

Skills developed during an internship are invaluable, provide a solid boost to the resume, and will help when entering the job market.

Internships also provide great professional networking opportunities, which will help an inexperienced young professional navigate to his/her goal.

Rodriguez, who served as a product engineer and communications co-chair for NGC ADELANTE, a Hispanic networking group for Northrop Grumman employees, added, “I cannot thank my employer, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, enough for allowing me to come in as an intern. It has allowed me to learn about the aerospace industry. The experiences with different programs, the incredible people I’ve met, and the opportunities to advance my career are second to none.”

A corporate communications manager at Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation agreed.

“With a market often flooded with recent graduates seeking entry-level job opportunities, an internship helps students set themselves apart from the rest of the pack. Students grow during an internship, gaining confidence, communication techniques, and flexibility. The list goes on.”

The Raytheon Internship Summer Program 2024 is offering practical learning experiences and the chance to gain familiarity with cutting-edge technologies. The company provides a variety of internship jobs that cater to your interests.

Candidates need to have certain skills to secure an internship.

  • They should be enrolled in STEM degree programs such as computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Additionally, they should be proficient in programming languages like Java, C#, C++, and HTML, and have an understanding of enterprise frameworks.
  • Familiarity with various operating systems, security, electronics, digital signal processing, and network protocols is also preferred.
  • Candidates should highlight their work experiences and involvement in student groups and community organizations. Being a part of professional associations like IEEE of SHPE can provide valuable networking opportunities.
  • Moreover, candidates should possess strong communication skills, professionalism, and an in-depth understanding of the company and its products. Independent thinking, curiosity, creativity, and innovation are also valued qualities.
  • Interns and co-ops should treat their job experience as something more than just a job.
  • They should take advantage of every opportunity to learn, network, and develop in an area that interests them.
  • If they are given administrative-type roles that do not utilize their skills, they should immediately speak with their managers or college recruiting staff.
  • Whether it’s in the manufacturing industry, software/IT, defense, or government, while gaining valuable hands-on experience. Be open and willing to take on new tasks and challenges. Drive and determination may help you land your dream job.
