The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has announced that 18 students have been awarded scholarships to fund their studies abroad this summer. Students will study arts and sciences in a hands-on environment that provides language and cultural immersion. Alan Earhart, director of International Programs & Partnerships, said efforts to help students find funding for travel abroad have been important to University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s success.
“This year, the awards are 18 Gilman scholarships for about $65,000,” he said in a statement. “In the UT System, we are second for the number of scholarships awarded, after UT Austin.”
The Gilman Scholarship Program is a part of the state of Texas Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and enables students to experience foreign travel as part of their education.
Gilman Scholarship recipients include Hortencia Montemayor (graphic design), Emma Martinez (chemistry), John Marroquin (computer science), Maricruz Flores (electrical engineering), Rodrigo Padron (biology), and Alexandra Salinas (mechanical engineering).
The students come from UTRGV campuses throughout the Rio Grande Valley including Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island.
