Miami University’s Fall Commencement was held last week, celebrating the Class of 2024 with family, friends, and the Miami community.
Oxford, Ohio’s public research university and the tenth-oldest public university in the United States, is advancing in robotics and innovation.
Thanks to funding from the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s RAPIDS grant, it acquired a Boston Dynamics Spot robot, now named “Swoop Dogg.”
This four-legged robot, equipped with advanced sensors, cameras, and an Android-based tablet, is designed to assist in facility inspections, emergency response, and public safety operations.
Swoop Dogg can navigate hazardous sites, gather real-time disaster data, and capture 360-degree images, proving invaluable in fields like manufacturing, law enforcement, and border security.
Beyond its practical uses, the robot serves as an educational tool, inspiring K-12 students and university undergraduates through the College of Engineering and Computing’s outreach initiatives.
Notably, students created a 3D-printed “mini-Spot” based on Swoop Dogg’s design for a capstone project, exemplifying its influence on future engineering work.
Engineering students have also reprogrammed Swoop, a factory robot, to play Tic-Tac-Toe! Through teamwork and creativity, they are redefining robotics and gaining valuable lessons as they prepare for the industry.
Swoop Dogg has also been a fixture at various campus events, promoting hands-on learning and innovation.
As a symbol of creativity and engagement, Swoop Dogg will cheer on the RedHawks during the upcoming Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl, where they will face Colorado State on December 28, 2024.
Miami University is proud of our @MiamiOHCEC engineering students who reprogrammed Swoop, a factory robot, to play Tic-Tac-Toe! Through teamwork and creativity, they’re redefining robotics and gaining valuable lessons as they prepare for the industry.
