The University of North Texas has announced that six of its students have been selected for the first cohort of the Texas Leadership Research Scholars Program, sponsored by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

This program, which debuted in Fall 2024, provides research scholarships and leadership opportunities for high-achieving graduate students with financial need.

The University of North Texas (UNT) is one of nine public universities in Texas chosen to participate in this inaugural cohort, which awards selected doctoral researchers a scholarship of nearly $18,000, renewable for up to four years.

The UNT students chosen as part of the inaugural Texas Leadership Research Scholars include Garrett Cayce, Araceli Herrera Mondragon, Celeste Ortega-Rodriguez, Jose Robledo, Christian Quintero, and Emma Wimberg.

Cayce, a doctoral student in electrical engineering, is utilizing large datasets to make significant contributions across various fields. He is advancing artificial intelligence (AI) for good.

Robledo originally enrolled at UNT as a master’s student with plans to pursue physical therapy. His research examines stress responses to understand how diet influences gene expression and metabolism.

Mondragon, the first in her family to earn a bachelor’s degree, has co-authored three research articles and interned at Sandia National Laboratories in August 2024. She is investigating a new tech material.

Quintero researches body image and disordered eating in aesthetic sports.

Ortega-Rodriguez research has broader implications for understanding chemical exposure in humans.
