Research Internship program trains participants in industry-relevant research projects

The ATE program of the National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education is focused on supporting the education of technicians for high-tech fields in two-year institutions of higher education, driving America’s economy.

The MUREP program of NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Project, on the other hand, provides support for minority-serving institutions through multi-year research grants.

The MUREP Innovations in Space Technology Curriculum (MISTC) was designed to prepare NASA’s future workforce by collaborating with two-year/community colleges and utilizing NASA’s unique contributions.

MISTC proposals contain plans for curriculum innovations through partnerships with selected NASA Centers or facilities to enhance student understanding of space technology development.

The primary goals of MISTC include increasing the number of curricular offerings aligned with NASA Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD), developing experiential learning opportunities for students aligned with NASA STMD priority areas, and increasing the number of underrepresented students who complete STEM certificates/degrees.

Despite the challenges brought by COVID-19, the Bronx Community College of the City University of New York was able to continue the ongoing NSF and NASA Geospatial Projects at BCC-CUNY by taking Geospatial Workshops into the cloud using Amazon Web Services, and the analytical suite of software provided by L3 Harris, and the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri).

This allowed BCC-CUNY to offer the workshops for college students in the cloud, supporting programmatic goals of ATE and MUREP’s MISTC.

The Geospatial Center has trained over 300 participants and was awarded two additional grants to research COVID-19 and build an interactive dashboard.

Faculty and students have gained valuable research experience, boosting their careers and confidence. The Research Internship program trains participants in industry-relevant research projects, including air pollutant correlation with COVID-19 and GIS programming with Python.

As part of the 2021 Research Internship program, some interns developed and coded a website to simulate COVID-19 data in NYC.

They also animated geospatial concepts and principles, created educational materials for commonly used software, utilized Python to automate the download of satellite data, extracted Google Earth Image datasets using Python, and researched evolving geospatial technology.

A student from NYU participated in the 2022 Geospatial Internship program, where she delved into the growth, development, and usage of technology in the US market.

Additionally, she analyzed potential future pathways for college institutional access and utilized data analytics to assess information regarding educational institutions.
