The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) has announced the recipient of the 2024 AISES Technical Excellence Award.
This prestigious honor recognizes Dr. Mary Jo Ondrechen for her significant contributions to science, engineering, and technology.
Dr. Ondrechen’s work is making a substantial impact on the future of sustainable therapeutics and vaccines, while also promoting Indigenous representation in STEM fields.
Her innovative research in enzyme catalysis, coupled with her advocacy for Native students in STEM, exemplifies the spirit of reciprocity.
“As you progress through AISES, it’s not just about what you receive, but what you give back. Mary Jo perfectly embodies what we mean when we refer to AISES as a family through her actions,” said Sarah EchoHawk, AISES President.

Indiana University Bloomington received the award for Professional Chapter of the Year, while the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) was honored as the Undergrad/Grad Chapter of the Year.
Special recognition was given to Baylor University for Celebrating Culture, the University of Florida for Innovative Science, the University of Houston for Leadership in Science, the University of North Carolina Charlotte for Long-Term Sustainability, and UC Davis Graduate Students & Postdocs for Community Building.
