The Union Art Gallery is a space dedicated to exhibiting diverse and contemporary art at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
In partnership with Sociocultural Programming, the Women’s Resource Center, Cultures and Communities, and the Electa Quinney Institute for American Indian Education, they are sponsoring an exhibition titled “Seeds of Culture: The Portraits and Voices of Native American Women.”
The exhibition will take place from November 16 to December 15, 2023.
The exhibition features photographs by Matika Wilbur and aims to showcase the diversity and beauty of contemporary Native America while challenging stereotypical representations.
To coincide with the exhibition opening, Matika Wilbur spoke about her work on Thursday, November 16, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Union Ballroom.
She combines audio with photographed stories to create an immersive experience.
Wilbur is celebrated for initiating conversations about Native American experiences in the United States by combining imagery and stories.
Her recent publication, Project 562: Changing the Way We See Native America, quickly became a New York Times bestseller. The book tells the stories of members of federally recognized tribes in the United States.
Photographer Matika Wilbur will speak on Nov. 16 from 6-7pm in the @UWMUnion Ballroom to celebrate the opening of her exhibition, Seeds of Culture, in the Union Art Gallery. The exhibition will run through Dec. 15. https://t.co/XgpNZP2SiE
