In December 2024, San Diego State University (SDSU) allied with the University of California San Diego and the San Diego Community College District to ensure students, faculty, and staff across all three campus networks have access to the same artificial intelligence (AI) tools and training.

The partnership is now known as The Equitable AI Alliance.

As part of a public-private initiative to incorporate technology into classrooms across all California State University schools, San Diego State is rolling out AI-based educational tools to ensure historically underserved communities in higher education have meaningful access to and understanding of Generative AI.

The 16th annual Arizona State University (ASU) and Global Silicon Valley (GSV) Summit has announced that James Frazee, chief academic technology officer, SDSU; Vince Kellen, chief information officer, UC San Diego; and Michelle Fischthal, vice chancellor of institutional innovation and effectiveness, San Diego Community College District, will keynote at the AI Revolution Stage, April 5-7.

The speakers will focus on AI needs assessment, AI literacy, and access to bridge the digital divide across California’s higher education system to create an inclusive, AI-powered future for students at all levels.

In related news, San Diego State University (SDSU) has announced the launch of “Science + Humanities: Entanglement in the Age of AI” in partnership with SDSU Digital Humanities. This event marks the beginning of CAL’s multi-year HŪMTECH initiative, which aims to address pressing questions facing both SDSU and society today.

One of the upcoming events will feature a conversation with N. Katherine Hayles, a prominent digital media scholar, and Rita Raley, a leading thinker on AI and its relationship to the humanities.

This discussion is scheduled for Monday, March 24, at the Digital Humanities Center in the University Library.

SDSU reported that the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering, hosted by Generation STEAM at Petco Park, attracted attendees of all ages for a day filled with STEM activities.

Over 21,500 people visited the stadium this year, an increase from last year’s 17,000 attendees, to participate in immersive learning experiences covering various science and engineering topics.

Throughout the event, SDSU volunteers led community members in hands-on activities, showcased STEM-inspired art pieces, and demonstrated important lessons in cybersecurity.

Max Carrillo, a second-year computer science major, and SDSU Cyber Defense Team secretary told SDSU that he hoped the event would inspire children to become the next generation of leaders in cybersecurity.

Trianna Nguyentu, a first-year computer science major and SDSU Cyber Defense Team member noted that being at the booth for cybersecurity at SDSU and engaging with the community while interacting with the kids as they made cipher bracelets was an unforgettable experience.

The event brought together local families, high school students interested in STEM careers, educational institutions, and various industry and government organizations for a day dedicated to science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM).
