Last September, New England Biolabs, Inc. (NEB) announced the winners of its fourth Passion in Science Awards. These awards celebrate scientists whose innovative work significantly impacts the arts, humanitarian efforts, and science mentorship.
On October 9th and 10th, 2024, NEB hosted the award recipients at its headquarters in Massachusetts. During this event, the winners received their awards, shared their success stories, and engaged in group discussions and creative brainstorming sessions with the NEB community.
The recipients included several notable Science Mentorship and Advocacy Award winners.
Rogelio Hernandez Lopez is co-founder of the Clubes de Ciencia program, which is part of Science Clubs International (Clubes de Ciencia in Latin America). He has been instrumental in hosting hands-on STEM workshops for Latin American high school and college students, reaching thousands of students across nine countries.
Alyssa Paparella, representing the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, initiated Disabled in STEM. This program connects individuals with disabilities in STEM fields to mentors. So far, this program has facilitated connections for 380 individuals.
Additionally, Don Spratt developed the Clark University STEM Outreach Program, aimed at encouraging underrepresented groups to explore and pursue careers in STEM.
Alyssa has personally experienced the challenges faced by prospective scientists with disabilities.
During the COVID pandemic, she struggled to find accessible graduate programs in STEM, and, driven by her gratitude for an undergraduate mentor, she founded a peer-to-peer mentorship organization for individuals like herself.
Over the past four years, Disabled in STEM has supported more than 145 mentees and offers a community Slack channel for collective problem-solving and support.
Informed by his experiences growing up in Mexico, Rogelio recognized that students in some regions have limited access to information about what it means to be a scientist or how to navigate a scientific career.
To address this gap, he co-founded Clubes de Ciencia, which offers week-long courses designed to inspire students and teach them the “hidden curriculum” needed for successful STEM careers, such as how to gain research experience and apply for college or graduate school.
After ten years, the program has engaged 6,848 students in Mexico and more than 20,000 in Latin America, some of whom have returned to serve as instructors.
Chemistry professor Don Spratt’s STEM outreach program began when a high school student expressed interest in touring the Don Spratt lab.
This initiative evolved primarily through word-of-mouth among local high schools and is now in its sixth year.
This spring break, Spratt taught nearly 80 students from three local high schools, guiding them through experiments to help them feel welcome, capable, and excited about participating in a college-level laboratory environment.
For 50 years, New England Biolabs (NEB) has been at the forefront of discovering and producing innovative products for molecular biology research. Guided by its foundational principles, NEB actively invests in initiatives that enhance the well-being of its employees and the surrounding community.
NEB is a privately held company with a global presence, supported by its headquarters in the USA, subsidiary offices in ten countries, and over 60 distribution partners worldwide.
