Over 55 percent of Hispanic/Latino college students in the U.S. attend an Hispanic-Serving Institution

There are over 500 Hispanic-Serving Institutions across 27 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, which collectively educate more than 4.7 million students.

Over 55 percent of Hispanic/Latino college students in the U.S. attend an Hispanic-Serving Institution, with nearly 40 percent attending a two-year Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI).

HSIs are crucial in shaping the future of higher education in the United States.

This summer, President Biden recently signed an Executive Order to establish the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

This Executive Order creates a new Initiative and President’s Board of Advisors for HSIs, aimed at advancing educational opportunities for Latino communities and promoting equal access to the American dream.

The initiative will work to increase awareness of opportunities for HSIs to participate in federal programs, enhance the capacity of HSIs to meet the educational needs of their students, and identify best practices to support students’ academic success and economic mobility.

Additionally, the initiative will help HSIs align their program offerings with the nation’s economic needs and local economies, especially in STEM and teaching.

It will also coordinate efforts to help HSIs become fiscally secure institutions and foster collaboration between HSIs and various organizations to further their goals.

Moreover, the initiative will enhance federal recruitment activities at HSIs, provide tools and analytics to support HSIs in improving students’ educational equity, excellence, and economic opportunity, and build accessible pathways to federal career opportunities for HSI students, faculty, staff, and alums.
