Aaniiih Nakoda College held its commencement ceremony on May 9. This event followed the college’s recent announcement that it has been designated as one of the nation’s Opportunity Colleges and Universities according to the Carnegie Classifications.
This honor recognizes institutions that combine greater access to education with the potential for higher earnings.
In essence, Aaniiih Nakoda College not only ensures that students can access education, but it also equips them with the skills and credentials needed to succeed in the workforce and earn competitive wages.
Remarkably, only 16% of colleges and universities across the United States have received this recognition.
Aaniiih Nakoda College was acknowledged for enrolling students who reflect the communities they serve and for effectively supporting them in achieving meaningful outcomes after graduation.

The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) congratulated its accredited Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) on receiving the prestigious, merit-based Carnegie Classification as an Opportunity College and University (Higher Access, Higher Earnings).
Apart from Aaniiih Nakoda College, the list of recognized institutions includes Bay Mills Community College, Blackfeet Community College, Diné College, Fort Peck Community College, Haskell Student Success Center, Leech Lake Tribal College, Little Big Horn College, Little Priest Tribal College, SKC-Department of Academic Success, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, Tohono O’odham Community College, Turtle Mountain College, and White Earth Tribal and Community College.
On May 8, Bay Mills Community College announced that 184 graduates had earned 203 credentials—their largest class ever. This includes the first-ever bachelor’s degrees in business administration and computer information systems.
Earlier in May, Bay Mills announced that they earned the prestigious Carnegie Opportunity Colleges and Universities (Higher Access, Higher Earnings) classification—placing them among the top Tribal Colleges & Universities in the nation for student success.
