Last week, OpenAI announced the introduction of a study mode in ChatGPT to help students work through problems step by step, rather than just providing direct answers.

According to the news release, this feature is available to logged-in users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, as well as in ChatGPT Edu.

The goal of the study mode is to support genuine learning, encouraging users to understand concepts rather than simply receiving solutions.

Features like guiding questions will prompt users to think critically and build a deeper understanding of the material.

The content is organized into easy-to-follow sections that highlight key connections between topics. Lessons will be tailored to the user’s skill level, based on assessments and memory from previous interactions.

In April, OpenAI announced on X (formerly known as Twitter) that ChatGPT can reference past chats to provide more personalized responses. This feature is designed to utilize user preferences and interests to enhance assistance in areas like writing, seeking advice, and learning.

Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI since 2019, informed his followers on X about the significant improvements to ChatGPT’s memory capabilities, allowing it to recall previous conversations.

He expressed excitement about this feature, suggesting it could help AI systems develop a deeper understanding of users over time, making them increasingly personalized and helpful.

The memory feature has been rolled out for pro users and is expected to be available for plus users soon.

Users have the option to opt out of the memory feature or choose a temporary chat option that does not use memory.

More recently, TechCrunch reported that, shortly after publishing an article about a feature allowing users to make their public conversations discoverable by search engines, this feature was removed.

According to the TechCrunch writer covering technology and culture, ChatGPT stated that this was a short-lived experiment that inadvertently created opportunities for users to share sensitive information.

TechCrunch discovered this feature when filtering search results on Google, Bing, and other search engines, which included conversations with ChatGPT from various users.

Most users prefer ChatGPT as a single-use search engine and appreciate starting with a clean slate for each query. Relying on past conversations can sometimes introduce bias into responses, as the model may depend too heavily on its memory, even when the context is no longer relevant.
