This week, NVIDIA announced on social media its plan to launch ABCI-Q, the world’s largest quantum research supercomputer, in partnership with AIST.
According to the press release, the supercomputer will feature over 2,000 NVIDIA GPUs integrated with a quantum processor. It is expected to transform various industries, including healthcare, energy, and finance.
To enhance quantum processors’ potential for improving AI supercomputers’ ability to address complex challenges in sectors like healthcare, energy, and finance, NVIDIA has announced the establishment of the Global Research and Development Center for Business by Quantum-AI Technology.
This center hosts ABCI-Q, the world’s largest research supercomputer dedicated to quantum computing, developed in collaboration with Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST).
The ABCI-Q supercomputer has 2,020 NVIDIA GPUs interconnected by the NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking platform.
This pioneering setup facilitates quantum-GPU computing at an unprecedented scale, representing a significant advancement toward practical and accelerated quantum systems.
The system integrates NVIDIA CUDA-Q™, an open-source hybrid computing platform that manages the hardware and software necessary for large-scale quantum computing applications.
Tim Costa, senior director of computer-aided engineering, quantum, and CUDA-X™ at NVIDIA, said seamlessly coupling quantum hardware with AI supercomputing will expedite the realization of quantum computing’s promise for everyone.
He emphasized that NVIDIA’s partnership with AIST will drive advancements in areas like quantum error correction and application development, which are vital for creating practical and accelerated quantum supercomputers.
ABCI-Q’s AI supercomputing is integrated with Fujitsu’s superconducting qubit processor, QuEra’s neutral atom quantum processor, and OptQC’s photonic processor, enabling hybrid quantum-GPU workloads across various qubit types.
Masahiro Horibe, deputy director of G-QuAT and AIST, remarked that ABCI-Q will allow researchers in Japan to tackle the core challenges faced by quantum computing technologies and accelerate the journey toward practical use cases.
He noted that the NVIDIA-accelerated computing platform within ABCI-Q will empower scientists to experiment with the foundational systems necessary for advancing quantum computing.
