In December 2023, the Office of Teaching and Effectiveness and Innovation at Clemson University announced details of a conference focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) and teaching.

Mitch Shue, professor of practice and executive director of Clemson’s AI Research Institute for Science and Engineering (AIRISE), was set to be the keynote speaker.

The one-day event in February 2024 was centered on AI and teaching. Attendees learned, shared, and discussed ways in which AI has changed or will impact their teaching practices and were inspired to help students use AI as part of their learning journey.

After attending the conference, participants were able to define AI in a higher education context, identify AI applications for the higher education classroom, and prepare Clemson students to use AI effectively and ethically.

During the February 2024 event, students, faculty, and staff participated in Clemson University’s inaugural conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and teaching.

Teaching in the Age of AI” addressed practices to help students use AI in their learning journeys. Faculty presentations, posters, and industry and student panels rounded out the day and brought voices from all perspectives to contribute to the discussion surrounding teaching in the age of AI.

More recently, Elon University and the American Association of Colleges and Universities announced the release of the first edition of a student guide to navigating college in the artificial intelligence era.

The guide’s publication coincided with the start of the 2024-25 academic year. It is being offered free to students and institutions to distribute and adapt under a Creative Commons license.

The guide is available at studentguidetoai.org. The guide includes “the essential AI ‘how-to’ manual” with ground rules for students to follow in their classes and a checklist for using AI ethically.

Students will find suggestions for ways to use AI, cautions about the downsides of using AI, lists of AI resources, and tips for writing prompts. There are also sections on creating an academic journey that prepares students to succeed in an AI-infused world and advice about doing a career search using AI.

More than 100 students at multiple universities submitted input and questions for inclusion in the guide, with answers from the guide’s authors and editors.

The creation of the guide was coordinated by Elon University’s Imagining the Digital Future Center. Authors, editors, and reviewers include 35 faculty, scholars, and academic leaders from 14 countries. The guide will be updated as AI continues to evolve, with changes made to the guide’s website and revised editions published for future academic terms.

This week, Stanford University’s faculty-leading AI research and development will be available for questions in a free online information session about a comprehensive suite of online AI courses taught by Stanford’s top faculty members.

The session will provide insights into courses that cover fundamental concepts, the latest tools and techniques powering the AI revolution, and various AI topics to help you achieve your unique learning goals.
