The American Indian College Fund has announced the beginning of submissions for the Tribal College Blanket Design Contest. Now in its fifth year, this annual contest kicked off on November 15, 2024, and showcases the work of talented artists attending tribal colleges and universities (TCUs).

Each year, the College Fund awards millions of dollars in scholarships to thousands of TCU students, and this blanket design contest adds to that support by highlighting Native art, culture, and stories.

In partnership with Pendleton Woolen Mills, a lifestyle brand based in Portland, Oregon, the College Fund invites submissions from American Indian and Alaska Native students enrolled at a TCU.

The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2025. Winners of the competition will have their designs featured on products and receive scholarships and cash prizes.

Winning designs will be showcased on wool blankets within Pendleton’s American Indian College Fund collection.

Pendleton has collaborated with the College Fund since 1995 and has contributed over $1.3 million in scholarship support for American Indian and Alaska Native students at TCUs.

Located on Indian reservations and in remote rural areas, TCUs play a vital role in providing access to higher education, career advancement, and Indigenous knowledge for their communities.

Any American Indian or Alaska Native student currently attending a TCU can submit up to two designs.

Formal artistic training or textile design experience is not required. Contestants have the opportunity to win scholarships, blankets, and cash prizes.

Each year, winners are selected by a committee composed of Native American artists as well as staff from both the College Fund and Pendleton.

Prizes for the 2024 contest winners include cash awards up to $2,000, along with scholarships of $5,000, $2,500, and $1,500.
