Abdalrahman Elaksher, a recent graduate in chemical engineering, grew up on the Las Cruces campus of New Mexico State University.

His father, Ahmed Elaksher, is an engineering professor, and his mother, Samar Khalil, who works for NMSU Global, earned her Ph.D. at NMSU.

Both of his sisters also attended NMSU.

Despite receiving acceptance from several top-tier engineering schools across the country, he chose NMSU because it was home.

While at NMSU, Elaksher worked as an undergraduate research assistant in a chemistry lab and assisted in researching techniques to filter and purify water.

He acknowledges the opportunities he had at NMSU and wants to help those who are not as fortunate.

Guillermo Juan-Daniel Soltero, a student at the College of Engineering, won the Outstanding Graduate Award presented by the Alumni Association of New Mexico State University.

The award recognizes students from each university, college, and graduate school who excel in academics, leadership, and extracurricular activities.

It is a prestigious honor, and the recipients are chosen based on their academic accomplishments, leadership abilities, and extracurricular commitments.

Francisca, a proud member of the Navajo Nation, graduated from NMSU’s social work program.

In a video, she reflects on her journey at NMSU and expresses gratitude for the experiences, valuable connections, and welcoming environment she found.

Angel Amabisco, a graduate with bachelor’s degrees in government and Spanish, was the first in his family to attend and graduate from college.

He initially wanted to join the military after high school but couldn’t because of his vision.

He found other paths to potential service careers at NMSU, including joining the Model U.N. team and interning for U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich.

He also worked for Doña Ana County’s magistrate court, served as director of public relations for the Associated Students of NMSU, and was president of the Arts and Sciences Council.

Amabisco will start a graduate program in international affairs at Texas A&M University in the fall and plans to work for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

NMSU held three commencement ceremonies for spring 2024 graduates on May 10 and 11 at the Pan American Center.

The Friday ceremony celebrated graduate degree candidates, while the two Saturday ceremonies were for undergraduates.

NMSU conferred over 2,000 degrees during the ceremonies.

The Saturday morning ceremony honored undergraduates from the College of Health, Education and Social Transformation, College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, and College of Business.

The afternoon ceremony recognized undergraduates from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering.
