The University of Illinois Chicago has announced that Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda welcomed more than 6,400 new first-year and transfer students to campus during the 2024 UIC Convocation on Aug. 28 at Harrison Field.
Miranda, a former professor of applied computational mathematics and statistics at the University of Notre Dame, became the 10th chancellor of the University of Illinois Chicago in July 2023.
The UIC chancellor is the first member of her family to be born in the United States.
According to UIC, it has gained U.S. Department of Education status as a university serving a high enrollment of racial and ethnic minority and low-income students.
In 2016, the Department of Education affirmed UIC’s designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI).
The UIC has several efforts to increase the number of Latino/a and low-income students attaining degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
During the 2024 UIC Convocation, the students began a new campus tradition to showcase UIC pride. Wearing red shirts and caps, they formed the university’s giant logo for an overhead photo.
