The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has announced it is focusing research efforts on areas such as Hispanic student success, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, cancer therapeutics, advanced manufacturing, water scarcity, rehabilitation engineering, and national security.
This year, the university plans to hire 69 tenured faculty, research faculty, and postdoctoral researchers to lead the way in these research areas.
As a leading Hispanic-serving university in America, UTEP enrolls a student body where 84% of the 24,000 students are Hispanic, and more than half are the first in their families to attend college.
UTEP offers 170 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs.
During the Fall Convocation’s State of the University Address, UTEP President Heather Wilson announced that the Regents’ Research Excellence Program will provide support for recruiting these 69 new researchers to advance discovery across various fields.
The university has also allocated $12 million annually towards research, which will almost double the number of research faculty at UTEP.
This additional funding comes after a record-breaking year with research expenditures totaling $145.7 million in FY23.
