Medtronic and the Medtronic Foundation partnered with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) to create a program that helps provide pathways for students in STEM disciplines. They committed over $3 million over the next four years for scholarships, internships, and mentorship opportunities.
The Medtronic Foundation is also donating to a scholarship program that will assist students with education costs and help them focus on their studies without the financial burden.
“Our partnership with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers will reduce barriers for low-income Hispanics and Latinos completing STEM degrees,” Liz Lund, the Foundation’s director of strategic operations, said. “Together we will help grow the representation of underserved and underrepresented communities within the STEM workforce and create economic mobility for our scholars and their families.”
The InternSHPE and MentorSHPE programs kicked off at the beginning of the year and interviews were conducted to find interns to join the organization. The program aims to provide representation and opportunities to students in marginalized communities.
“I was a SHPE chapter leader years ago and now I have the opportunity to work directly with the organization to bring this program to life,” quality systems director, Gerardo Zuñiga, said. “I took on leading this because I know how important it is to be a mentor to other Hispanics and Latinos in this space and the value and opportunities this program will bring to SHPE students.”
Although the program is not directly providing jobs, they are shaping the STEM community by providing opportunities to Latino students.
