New grant will expand language revitalization efforts of the Cherokee and Indigenous Studies

The Northeastern State University’s Center for Tribal Studies has been awarded $2.4 million from the U.S. Department of Education’s Native American Serving Nontribal Institutions program.

The grant will help enhance service outreach and improve retention and completion rates among low-income and American Indian students.

The grant will span a period of five years, from 2023 to 2028, and will be aimed at supporting a range of initiatives

It will include the establishment of a cultural and life skills lab, upgraded campus-wide software to enhance the delivery of student services, professional development for faculty and staff, and immersive learning experiences to broaden Cherokee language offerings.

NSU President Rodney Hanley expressed his dedication to supporting and empowering Native American communities

Stating that the grant will allow the university to expand its initiative and outreach programs, expand the Native language revitalization efforts of the Cherokee and Indigenous Studies program, and develop innovative solutions that address the educational and cultural needs of the Native American population at NSU.

The grant will be used to upgrade the Bacone House at NSU and hire additional personnel, create an online Cherokee language course, and offer certification training to reinforce the university’s successful strategy in bolstering student retention.

The director of the Center for Tribal Studies, Sara Barnett, expressed her excitement about the renovation of the Bacone House to serve as a cultural and life skills lab, stating that it was important to preserve the historic building and maintain its original purpose of serving American Indian students.
