The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) to enhance Indigenous knowledge, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, as well as workforce training opportunities for tribal communities.
This collaboration aims to build climate resilience.
The MOU outlines that NOAA and AIHEC will meet annually to discuss priorities, review progress, and explore ways to improve their implementation.
Each year or as needed, NOAA and AIHEC will jointly develop a plan of activities to enhance communication and coordination.
If appropriate, NOAA and AIHEC may collaborate on the creation and sharing of educational and outreach materials, best practices, and tools, which could include websites, video archives, and data management systems.
Furthermore, the agreement encourages meetings to be held at tribal colleges and universities.
Recognizing their shared goal of making both the U.S. and tribal nations more resilient to the effects of climate change, this MOU is designed to identify opportunities for collaboration.
