Native American Heritage Month 2024

POSTED ON Nov 01, 2024

Southern Illinois University News has announced that in recognition of Native American Heritage Month, Southern Illinois University Carbondale will host events and activities throughout November under the theme “Confronting Challenges and Forging New Pathways.”

The kickoff event is scheduled for November 6, from 4-6 p.m. at Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium, featuring Jay Bird, author of “Hidden Under the Water,” who will speak and sign books.

Additionally, there will be a movie night showcasing “Killers of the Flower Moon” on November 7, from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Student Center Auditorium.

On November 14, a Native art paint party will be held from 4-5 p.m. in the Kaskaskia/Missouri Rooms of the Student Center.

According to recent data from the Census Bureau, titled “Facts for Features: National Native American Heritage Month: November 2024,” the first American Indian Day was celebrated in May 1916 in New York.

This event was the result of an effort by Red Fox James, a member of the Blackfeet Nation, who traveled across the United States on horseback, seeking approval from 24 state governments to establish a day in honor of American Indians.

In 1990, more than seven decades later, then-President George H.W. Bush signed a joint congressional resolution designating November as National American Indian Heritage Month.

Similar proclamations have been issued annually since 1994 to recognize what is now called National Native American Heritage Month.

  • As of 2023, the nation’s American Indian and Alaska Native population, whether alone or in combination with other race groups, is 7.4 million.
  • This population is projected to rise to 9.0 million by July 1, 2060, which would represent 2.5% of the total population.
  • In 2020, the population was 9.7 million.
  • The Census Bureau recognizes 325 distinct federally recognized American Indian reservations in 2024, including federal reservations and off-reservation trust lands, and there are 574 federally recognized Indian tribes as of 2024.
  • The number of single-race American Indian and Alaska Native veterans of the U.S. armed forces in 2023 is 120,476.
  • During the summer, South Dakota State University (SDSU) launched a project aimed at providing Native American students with hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) research.

This initiative, led by Derek Brandis, a post-doctorate research associate at SDSU, and Jihong Cole-Dai, a professor in the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics, allows participants to work in the Ice Core and Environmental Chemistry Lab within the College of Natural Sciences.

Over six weeks, students engaged in two projects related to the lab’s research focus: measuring perchlorate in rainwater samples collected around South Dakota and performing chemical analyses of polar ice cores.

Cole-Dai remarked, “SDSU scientific research offers opportunities for valuable experience to all students. Derek Brandis is helping Native American students discover and benefit from these opportunities. His efforts will help increase the contributions to science from South Dakota’s Native American communities.”

The project is supported by the National Science Foundation’s Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR).
