National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week will take place September 11-17

POSTED ON Jul 27, 2023

National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week is set to be celebrated from September 11th to 17th, during National Hispanic Heritage Month. The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, in collaboration with members of Congress, annually acknowledges the contributions of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) in their communities.

HSIs are institutions with 25% or more undergraduate Hispanic full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment. In the 2021-2022 academic year, 572 institutions met the HSI definition and enrolled 65.6% of all Hispanic undergraduates and 30.5% of all undergraduate students in nonprofit postsecondary education.

The HACU HSI Week Reception in 2022 was held in Washington, DC, to honor the federal designation of HSIs and celebrate the 30th anniversary of HSIs and the HACU National Internship Program. Executive Director Melody Gonzales delivered remarks at the reception.

In a proclamation designating National Hispanic-serving Institutions Week, President Biden acknowledged that Hispanic students currently comprise 20% of college undergraduates in the United States.

He emphasized that these students are the future leaders of the country, including doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs, artists, first responders, scientists, elected officials, and activists.

To ensure that these young people are equipped to face the challenges of the future, President Biden emphasized the importance of celebrating Hispanic-serving Institutions. These institutions cultivate cultures of belonging and respect on their campuses, providing a nurturing and inclusive environment for Hispanic students to learn and develop.

HACU-member HSIs are encouraged to participate in campus activities during National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week to raise awareness of the significant role HSIs play in improving access to education and advancing equity for traditionally underserved students.
