The National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers (NCHEPM) has announced the 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month National Poster: “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.”
The theme encapsulates the spirit of innovation, resilience, and unity that define the Hispanic experience. According to the press release, members of the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers, federal agency partners, employee resource groups, and the general public selected the poster through a substantive voting process.
Mariana I. Purcell Rivera, a Puerto Rican artist and an architecture student at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, submitted the winning theme.
From September 15 to October 15 each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the achievements, histories, traditions, and cultural diversity of Hispanic/Latino/Latinx Americans whose heritage is rooted in 20 Latin American countries and territories.
They include Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.
The NCHEPM supports the federal government’s observance activities by selecting the annual theme.
The national observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson.
It was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover 30 days, starting on September 15 and ending on October 15 of each year. This was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, with the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The NCHEPM advocates for improving Hispanic participation and representation in the federal government.
In related news, Participate Learning, a designated sponsor of the U.S. Department of State Exchange Visitor Program, shared a blog article emphasizing the significance of teachers from Spanish-speaking countries in American classrooms during Hispanic Heritage Month.
Participate Learning’s mission is to assist international teachers from over thirty countries in providing meaningful exchange in U.S. classrooms.
