Villarreal, a Colombian-born, was recently highlighted by NASA on social media during Hispanic Heritage Month 2023.
She has had a lifelong dream of becoming an astronaut, which started when she visited the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center at the age of seven.
The visit had a profound impact on her, and she was amazed by the rockets in the Rocket Garden and fascinated by the stories of the Moon landings.
At that time, she had no idea humans had ever been to space. Three years later, her family moved to the United States, and she realized that she might have a better chance of working in the space industry when she grew up.
As the Artemis landing and recovery director at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Liliana is responsible for ensuring the safe recovery of astronauts from the Pacific Ocean after the Artemis II mission to the Moon and back.
