In September 2020, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), a Hispanic-serving Institution (HSI), and Rust College, a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), announced that they had entered into a series of memorandums of understanding (MOUs)
Both institutions pride themselves on serving minority groups that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The MOUs allow them to offer designated spots and seats to qualified students from Rust College in UIW’s schools of osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, optometry, and physical therapy. The programs collectively will be known as UIW Health Professions Pathway.
This spring, UIW announced that the San Antonio, Texas-based HSI hosted an annual event that allows investors and Texas bioscience companies to come together. UIW’s health professions students were able to attend, allowing them to experience a real-world industry event in their field of study.
“The conference allows for professionals working in the bio health arena to share ideas and opportunities to increase the bio-health sector footprint in San Antonio,” UIW Provost Dr. Barbara Aranda-Naranjo said in a statement. “It also provides internship and job opportunities for students majoring in biomedical and health-related fields at universities across San Antonio like UIW.”
According to UIW, throughout the day, speakers and panelists addressed pertinent topics for bioscience companies, including early-stage investment options and grant funding, marketing essentials for commercial success, and keys to start-up success from CEOs.
Additional organizations were also on-site to provide information on support for bioscience entrepreneurs. The event allows companies to pitch their ideas to investors, with judges awarding a cash grand prize of $10,000 to the winner.
