The Latino STEM Alliance held a Robotics Competition and Family Science Festival earlier in the month of May, with student teams, volunteers, event exhibitors, and sponsors. The organization’s end-of-school-year competition in Roxbury, Massachusetts shone the spotlight on achievement with students (grades K-12) and companies and universities to inspire young people.
The Latino STEM Alliance (LSA) is made up of a group of STEM professionals who witnessed the lack of diversity in the tech sector and the challenge that corporations faced with filling highly qualified positions. According to their website, these professionals seized on an opportunity to broaden the career perspectives of under-served youth by developing STEM programs in marginalized communities.
They partner with schools and community organizations to provide hands-on experience in the engineering design process, project-based, experimental learning curriculum, student-led demonstration and presentation opportunities, visits from high school, university, or corporate mentors, field trips to companies, colleges, and other STEM-related organizations, as well as parent engagement events.
