You may not think that makeup is related to STEM, but the truth is makeup companies pay labs to formulate their products. A cosmetic chemist researches and develops cosmetic products such as makeup and skincare products.
A Latina has taken the makeup world by storm with her business partner. Dana Bomar and Lora Arellano are the owners and creators of Melt Cosmetics.
Arellano was born in Los Angeles on May 23, 1987. She began her makeup career when she was working at a makeup counter at a mall in her hometown. Arellano and Bomar met at work and together they brainstormed ideas for a new, innovative cosmetics brand.
Arellano put her makeup artistry to the test by sharing photos on Instagram. She quickly gained notoriety and was discovered by Rihanna who later hired her as her personal makeup artist. She has also worked for Serena Williams and Iggy Azalea.
Melt cosmetics was born in 2012 after Bomar and Arellano realized that there was a lack of unique, highly pigmented lipsticks on the market. The two used their lifesavings to develop these formulas and released their five shades of lipstick in May 2013. They sold out in minutes.
The duo bridged the gap between social media influencers and professional makeup artists. They marketed their products online and since the beginning of their journey, Arellano and Bomar have made millions selling their products.
